Don't Sleep Pt. One.

Taking the time out to speak about a couple of Artist/groups that you deserve to listen to.  Seemingly dominated by duos, and electro-pop but none will disappoint.  I promise.

Discovery

The first will be the dynamic duo which is Discovery  Their recent LP released in July 2009 consists of synths, auto-tunes and a cool little flashback of Jackson five "I want you want".  What more could one ask for?  Both men come from different bands (Vampire Weekend's Keyboardist, Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles) and decided to collaborate and make an album.  Although the sound of Discovery differs from a their original groups, what isn't different is the desire to open new doors creatively, and not be inhibited by what their typical audience would expect.  They get cool points for that!
Melanie Fiona

The next artist is Melanie Fiona, 27.  She is a Toronto, Ontario native of Guyanese descent.  Her radio hit of 2009 was "It kills me".  What makes her so sensational is that she has a lot of soul and flavor.  Her album The Bridge has a diverse mix of soulful hits that will be sure to please.  Other than her radio hit "It kills me" she has "Give it to me right" that once you here the music ("Time of the Season" by The Zombies) she's singing to it takes you back to a time that most of us haven't lived in, but she manages to take you time traveling with her vocals and express an emotion through her voice that if you haven't experienced, you will definitely empathize.

Junior Boys

Another Duo hailing from our Northernly neighbors, this time from Hamilton, Ontario.  What distinguishes the Junior Boys is their mix of Electronic and a very reflective ability in their songwriting.  Now I can't just say their recent release of Be Gone Dull Care in March 2009 should be heard because you can actually appreciate their songs from their very first album Last Exit released in 2003.  "Teach me how to fight" and "In the Morning" are songs that I really enjoy just to name a few.

MGMT

This by far has to be one of THE BEST breakout bands of 2009.  With their Pseudo-vintage new wave rock opera theatrics it's hard not to agree that if you don't know this group, you should!  Doesn't matter what genre of music you're into once you hear "Electric Feel" off their debut album Oracular Spectacular you fall down to the floor because you know that for once in this Pop culture saturated world, there are specs of hope for raw talent! If you haven't heard them, you really really need to, like Yesterday!  Their Great!

  • So this is the end of Part one of  "Don't Sleep"  Pt. Deux will be coming soon, until then feel free to comment and send me suggestions.  I'm totally down to hear what you guys have suggested.

Officially Initially

Sitting here trying to discern what would be the best way to introduce a fresh state of mind out in this very colorless world.  Where it seems that shock value has taken precedence over actually talent.  Don't misunderstand, this will not be a blog smashing on Pop culture trends, or bashing any artist on the scene, be it Fashion, Music, literary, etc.  This will be more of a showcase of thoughts, appreciation, and a "Hey, this is Cool, don't sleep on him/her!"

With all this being said, let us Begin!  Enjoy!!!
